Strangers & Beggars

When a beggar approaches, what do you do?

So far, I usually feel enough discomfort to either avoid him, give him all the change I have, or show my credit card as a non-cash-carrying person. I’d like to change that.

But how? Do I invite him into my home and feed him a meal? Or do I take him in and teach him how to earn a meal? Should I invest myself into the man behind the beggar or be a bystander?

I have heard of a few cases in which a member of the tech community educated a man on the street into a self-sufficient coding guru and have thought that perhaps there was a poor man’s bootcamp waiting to be started. But I’m not sure where in the spectrum of the condition of depravity do the majority of the poor sit? Are they ready to be nourished, clothed, hygienated, AND educated? Or should a step-wise introduction into society be followed to make sure self-actualization is made possible.

I’m not sure how to help without endangering myself or my family.
