“Time is money”. A timeless adage that plagues most of us. We run after time, money, or both and rarely find enough of either to think about how we spend them, a true catch-22.
How do we replace the fleeting feeling of “busyness” that comes with a 50h+ work week with the timeless feeling of “fulfillment” that comes with self-actualization? Time management. It ain’t sexy, but it’s the only tool we have at our disposal. You can always make more money, but you can not make more time, so if you had to choose, investing time in getting better at managing time is worth more than getting better at managing money. Fortunately for us, the two go well hand-in-hand.
Time is what allows us to be with family, friends, to travel, to develop our hobbies, and to continue to do everything that we love to do. Our day jobs are an exchange of our time for the money we need to do more of the above. Time is finite for everyone, and when a manager or colleague asks more of it from you, it’s a way of asking “can you spend less time on other things in your life that matter to you to work on something for me [employer]?”. Financial independence is better termed time independence (TI) for if you have to spend all your time earning / managing money in order to be “independent”, the question beckons what are you seeking independence from?
